Week 1 - crate texturing

During our first week of Game Texture Development we were told to create a simple crate and then design a hand painted texture for it which would involve the basic wood and then some text to make it look more interesting.
I began by creating a basic plane which I then extruded and scaled inwards to create an inner poly. With this I once again extruded and pushed it downwards to create the basic side of the crate.
With this I then duplicated the object and rotated to create the other sides of box until I had a complete crate.

It was fairly simple with the UV layout as they were all the same shape I was able to overlap the UV's which I then took a screen cap and placed onto Photoshop with the 256x256 canvas.

I began with a basic wood colour, I then added lines to the inner square to give the appearance of planks. I used the line tool and went along all the edges to create highlights for the wood, I then used overlay so it would blend in with the basic wood colour.
I then modified the basic brush and attempted to created the wooden strokes in the planks, this became difficult to create as I am still getting used to using a tablet and my strokes and often shaky and don't appear correct. however after multiple attempts I ended with a basic texture which I was satisfied with.
I then created text for it, I used a light colour for it which I then used overlay which made the colour sink into the basic wood colour which I think came out well.
