week 2- book texturing

This week we were given the task to create a book with 300 polys max, and to then texture it using possible images from the internet and to the manipulate them using Photoshop

Here is the basic model I created, it took a number of attempts to create this as I was over complicating it the first 3 times and I was going over the max poly limit. On the final attempt I was able to do it correctly by creating the basic box which I then extruded inwards and connected the correct vertices. Once I had the basic square shape I added roundness to the binding of the book by pulling out the edges necessary until it had a satisfying roundness. To then add more detail I pulled out the corners of the front and back cover to add the appearance of age to book. After I added the strap to the book, I did this by starting with a basic box and then extruding and scaling until I had the shape I needed. The finished model had 254 poly's

Once I was satisfied with the model I UV unwrapped it, since I still dont know how to properly do this quickly, I had to unwrap and sew each one individually ( I will need to learn how to do this properly soon ). I then arranged it like this to they all fit into the area well at a good scale.

I started out by merging to different leather textures together and editing the brightness/contrast and opacity. with the first texture I scaled it down so the detail wasn't too large, I then used the clone stamp tool to fill in the rest of the area

Here is the basic texture, I then added two lines to mark the edge of the book, I used a black and lowered the opacity, I then used outer glow to give it some depth.

I then began to add text and a logo, I used an item from an Anime as reference and used some images from the series. the actual book in the Anime is too simple so I added more text and an image to make it more detailed. with the images I changed it to screen mode and lowered the opacity and darkened the image so it blended in with the book so it didn't appear to just be thrown on.

Finally I added borders around the edges to add more detail and give it a better appearance of a book.

for the back cover I tried various different layouts but they seemed to cluttered so I went with a basic silhouette and then edited the same as the other images which gives the final layout

With the strap I used the same texture with the book, I then added silver circle at one end to give the appearance of a button to unclip the strap. I then found a stitch texture which I cut up, darkened, lowered the opacity and then duplicated around the border of the strap to make it look stitched which I think worked very well.

I found a book with withered pages, I then cut out the rest of the book and used transform perspective to make it a flat image, I then copied them and placed it to fit in with the book. with the long part I duplicated the image and flipped it so it would align with the pages at the edges.

Week 1 - crate texturing

During our first week of Game Texture Development we were told to create a simple crate and then design a hand painted texture for it which would involve the basic wood and then some text to make it look more interesting.
I began by creating a basic plane which I then extruded and scaled inwards to create an inner poly. With this I once again extruded and pushed it downwards to create the basic side of the crate.
With this I then duplicated the object and rotated to create the other sides of box until I had a complete crate.

It was fairly simple with the UV layout as they were all the same shape I was able to overlap the UV's which I then took a screen cap and placed onto Photoshop with the 256x256 canvas.

I began with a basic wood colour, I then added lines to the inner square to give the appearance of planks. I used the line tool and went along all the edges to create highlights for the wood, I then used overlay so it would blend in with the basic wood colour.
I then modified the basic brush and attempted to created the wooden strokes in the planks, this became difficult to create as I am still getting used to using a tablet and my strokes and often shaky and don't appear correct. however after multiple attempts I ended with a basic texture which I was satisfied with.
I then created text for it, I used a light colour for it which I then used overlay which made the colour sink into the basic wood colour which I think came out well.
